A thoughtfully placed accent wall can anchor or elevate a bathroom. One in three renovating homeowners adds or upgrades an accent wall during a master bathroom project, according to the 2019 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study. This striking feature can make an impact in small bathrooms as well. Looking at the selection of 10 accent walls we've gathered here, it's not hard to see why they're so popular. Whether it adds balance, character or a jolt of color or pattern, the feature is designed to grab attention.

1. Splash of Neutral Tile

This remodeled master bathroom in suburban Atlanta was inspired by the sleek, spa-like bathrooms the homeowners had encountered on their frequent travels abroad. Asked not to alter the spacious room's footprint, designer Laura Freeman of Merits Design Group replaced a bulky jetted tub with a double vanity, freeing up space against the wall seen here, where one of two vanities originally stood.

Freeman and her clients collaborated using ideabooks on Houzz, and ultimately Freeman chose to highlight the compact soaking tub by stretching a foot-wide column of mosaic tile from floor to ceiling. They opted for a neutral color palette, as did more than a third of renovating homeowners adding or upgrading an accent wall in a master bath, according to the Houzz study.

"C onceptually, I ran an accent up the shower where the water source is, so it made sense to do that on the accent wall where the freestanding tub is," Freeman says. "And it was another way to break up the monotony of the wall color. They wanted it very serene, but the mosaic enabled me to bring in some of the dark finish color that was in their vanity that they loved."

2. Gray, White and Patterned

It may not be as bright and colorful as some other accent walls, but this understated patchwork of grays and whites in a Kansas City bathroom is in line with the most popular accent wall design choices. Renovating homeowners in the 2019 Bathroom Trends Study who were upgrading a master bathroom reported that gray was their top accent wall color choice and pattern was the most common distinguishing feature.

3. Bold Blue Shower Tile

Saturated blue hexagonal shower tile pops against the crisp white of the rest of this California bathroom created by designer Yuri Gonzalez of Canyon Design Build. The seamless glass door makes the effect even more dramatic. The tile's clean geometric lines and color also emphasize the shower's interesting angular shape.

Blue was tied with multicolored as the second-most popular bathroom accent wall color among those who reported adding or upgrading such a wall. And placing the accent wall inside the shower, as the Canyon team did, was slightly more common than placing it outside.

4. Artistic Accent

This California powder room's bohemian-style curtain in a natural texture shows that accent walls needn't be limited to paint, wallpaper or tile.

5. Unexpected Pop of Color

This Dallas-area bathroom was dark and outdated, with a bulky cylindrical glass-block shower dominating the space, before the homeowner enlisted the help of designer Brittany Lyons of Brittany Lyons Art and Interiors.

"During the planning phase of the design, my client mentioned that she wanted the shower to be a fun statement since that wall would now be seen with a glass surround," Lyons says.

Working off an inspiration photo the homeowner loved, Lyons found several options for the feature wall. The homeowner chose this vibrant shade of chartreuse for the glass accent tile and Lyons stacked the tiles vertically to draw the eye up and keep the area from feeling too busy. Warm wood tones and neutral paint and flooring offer balance.

" It adds that unique, fresh look that my client wanted," Lyons says. "It also breaks up the white flooring and complements the other contemporary elements in the bathroom, as well as the rest of her home."

Lyons bought several of the bathroom's other items on Houzz, including the towel bars, sinks, toilet and tub.

6. Floral Focal Point

A mural that covers an entire shower wall in this sophisticated New York bathroom adds personality and visual interest.

7. Whimsical Wallpaper

The playful cross motif of the wallpaper on this California accent wall echoes a similar detail in the shower. The team at Mr. Build Construction wanted to incorporate color and fun in the space for the homeowners' 13-year-old son while also making it mature enough for guests.

8. Warm and Natural

The off-white wall in this Minneapolis-area powder room is meant to add warmth and detail, designer Lori Anderson of design firm EuroNest says. With the dark wood vanity and floors and the white walls, the feature wall provides subtle contrast. Anderson worked with the team at MA Peterson Designbuild on the project.

9. Midcentury Fish Scale

A wall of Moroccan fish-scale tile from Minnesota's Mercury Mosaics and Tile immediately jumps out in this Palm Springs, California, home. Tile was central to the careful update carried out by the team at Fox Homes on the midcentury modern house designed by Joseph Eichler. In this bathroom, warm wood and clean white details allow the dramatic wall to shine.

10. Tone-on-Tone With a Touch of Glam

Designer Julia Piterkina and the team at Ulle Studio faced two main challenges with this Seattle-area bathroom: They needed to make the compact space feel bigger and they needed to convince the homeowners to sign off on their outside-the-box blue-on-blue vision.

"We wanted to give our clients something unique and unexpected yet timeless and classic, a solution that would make the bathroom better (and seem larger) but still cohesive with the rest of the house that is transitional in style," Piterkina says. "That is how the idea of the color of the wall was born: a classic deep blue that works in almost any setting, whether modern or traditional."

Instead of the traditional white or wood cabinetry, the team chose another shade of blue to "add an element of the unexpected, and add sophistication with the tone-on-tone combo and golden accents," Piterkina says. Other details were carefully chosen to support the look.

"We were lucky to have amazing clients that would trust our vision and go with the selections we made," she says.
